This note describes some recent work at IRENA to measure or estimate recent trends in off-grid renewable energy production and use. In 2016 IRENA estimated that 133 million were accessing electricity through off-grid sources. However, measuring this production dependent upon difficult to collect data, including to monitor progress towards universal energy access and inform policy action.
The note explains how IRENA approached the challenges of data collection and the methodologies used to produce -grid energy production and use. It finishes by presenting a brief overview of the data collected so far, followed by detailed tables of the off-grid data by country, technology and year.
