Fridays for Climate | A waste management centre for Maldives’ Addu Atoll

In the south of Maldives, the Climate Change Adaptation Project, a part of the GCCA+ EU’s flagship programme, aims to increase environmental protection and ecotourism. 🌍

At the Hulhumeedhoo waste management centre, on the eastern side of Addu Atoll, trash brought from the community is being sorted by the locals. ♻️ Plastic is shredded for export, glass bottles are crushed into small pieces and mixed into concrete, while leaves, food waste and other organic material are composted and sold back to the farmers to fertilise their crops.

“Since the nature park was created, the whole place looks better and cleaner. We love it and we often come here to snorkel. I am proud of having a place like this on my island.”
- Saheema, mother-of-two and frequent visitor with her children
