Fridays for Climate | Waste management in Liberia

In Liberia, waste management is an increasing source of public health and environmental concerns čîŹ. The national Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has been building commitment among the municipalities responsible for managing waste. Though progress is evident, critical infrastructures and sewage systems are rudimentary or inexistent.

GCCA+ supports Liberia to improve its waste management system. Various approaches have been identified as a part of the solution such as recycling, composting, energy production from waste, job creation and value-added in waste. The programme aims also to establish a sectoral measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system to measure the impact of greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector to conduct tailored solutions ÔÖ╗´ŞĆ .

Eradicate waste requires sustained behavioural change by governments, citizens and private actors based upon new understandings about the impact on their well-being of waste generation, disposal and management čî┐.
